Attending college is not only about excelling academically, but also using those skills outside of the classroom. For Sydney Mason, a member of Walk it Out, attending college means working with local businesses to celebrate diversity, fashion, and raise awareness for HIV/AIDS-related issues. Walk It Out (WIO) is one of several student organizations recognized at the Hawkeye Leadership & Service Awards held on May 1st at the Iowa Memorial Union.

Choosing Entrepreneurship at Iowa
What’s up? My name is Rachel and I’m a junior studying English who loves to read and write more than anything. I feel lucky that I only switched my major once before finding the right one for me. Something I never considered, though, was a Business degree. That is until recently, when I discovered I wanted to get a certificate in Entrepreneurial Management. Why? Because these classes are going to help me create something I love that I can share with the world.

Waste audits help improve recycling efforts Story by Hanna Rosman When sorting through someone else’s garbage, you never know what you’ll find. Participants in the annual waste audit in the Burge Carnival Room encountered stale food, clothing, and even some dollar bills. This year’s waste audit for Burge and Daum halls happened on April 3.

Body image awareness
At the University of Iowa Health Fair on March 6th, the Eating Disorder Awareness Advocates (EDAA) placed a life-sized Barbie® doll on display. With a height of 5’9” and weight of 110 pounds, the EDAA sought to use this visual representation to highlight the pervasiveness of unrealistic body images in the media. For Nina Aleksic, junior and biomedical engineering major at the UI, it’s an issue that is especially salient to students on a college campus.

Apply Now, Relax Later [FAFSA]
It’s that time of year again — the time when students fill out endless stacks of forms to apply for a plethora of things from housing to job applications. One important application that students need not forget, is the FAFSA. The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is a form to be prepared annually for college students. What it does is assess the eligibility for student financial aid. This financial aid consists of money you do and don’t have to pay back, including federal loans (do pay back) and grants (don’t pay back).
